The main contributing factors are the soaring inflation rates, high taxes, and an overall decline in purchasing power. The situation is so grim that many families can no longer afford necessities like food and medicines.
The Beirut blast in August 2020 destroyed many houses and displaced hundreds of thousands of people. The Covid-19 pandemic aggravated the situation. It led to a decrease in tourism and an overall economic decline. The situationis exacerbated by the government’s inability to provide adequate assistance to its people. It includes access to social services, healthcare, and education.
The country has been in a downward spiral for years, with its public debt reaching $98.7 billion in May 2021. The situation is only getting worse.
