Do You Hear Gaza’s Plea for Help?
Gaza – a meagre 140 square miles of land – is one of the most
Lebanon is multidimensionally poor; not only are its people economically struggling, but they are also facing political instability. The main contributing factors are the soaring inflation rates, high taxes, and an overall decline in purchasing power. The situation is so grim that many families can no longer afford necessities like food and medicines.
It’ll be an understatement to say that only one or two factors are to blame for Lebanon’s economic situation. The country has been in a downward spiral for years, with its public debt reaching $98.7 billion in May 2021. It is about 170% of the GDP. In other words, for every $100 generated in the country, $170 is owed. The situation is only getting worse.
The Beirut blast in August 2020 destroyed many houses and displaced hundreds of thousands of people. The Covid-19 pandemic aggravated the situation. It led to a decrease in tourism and an overall economic decline. The situation is exacerbated by the government’s inability to provide adequate assistance to its people. It includes access to social services, healthcare, and education.
If one could survive the blow of malnourishment and extreme poverty, there’s always the danger of being caught in the crossfire of conflict.
The current situation in Lebanon is untenable, and something needs to be done urgently. The people are desperately in need of a donation. If you feel the pain of the situation, please donate whatever you can.
Together, we can make a difference.
