The country primarily relies on agriculture, which employs 70% of the population. However, the sector only contributes 21% to the GDP. The situation was already dire before the floods, with more than half of the population living below the poverty line. The situation may worsen in the wake of the disaster.

The people are at an increased risk of contracting viruses, as they live in close quarters without any access to clean water or sanitation.

Floods have damaged three major medical facilities and destroyed over 50 schools. Extensive damage to roads and bridges, making it difficult for people to move around or access essential services. The agricultural sector has severely suffered, with crops and livestock being swept away. It will have a long-lasting effect on food security in Uganda.
